In wastewater infrastructure, visible deterioration is rarely the beginning of the problem. By the time concrete has softened, reinforcement has been exposed, a lining has blistered or a chamber has reached structural distress, the more important decisions have usually already been made.
Those decisions include geometry, ventilation, material selection, access, inspection planning, shutdown strategy and future repair.
Because we still think biogenic corrosion is a repair problem instead of a design decision.
