Extending the life of critical infrastructure
The SH29A Maungatapu Bridge is a key transport link spanning the Maungatapu Channel in Tauranga.
Operating within a demanding marine environment, the bridge has undergone a number of maintenance interventions throughout its life to address deterioration and extend its service life. Contech was engaged to undertake the latest programme of targeted concrete repairs, restoring durability while minimising disruption to road users and marine activities.
Concrete repairs are an important part of managing ageing infrastructure. In aggressive environments, periodic intervention can significantly extend asset life and defer the need for major replacement.

The challenge
The bridge structure comprises precast prestressed concrete log beams supporting an in-situ reinforced concrete deck, founded on reinforced concrete piers and abutments.
Inspections identified several areas requiring remediation, including:
- Localised spalling beneath precast concrete kerbs along deck edges
- Exposed and corroded reinforcement within selected pier capping beams
- Defects at log beam end zones where concrete cover was insufficient
- Areas of soffit deterioration associated with pre-tensioned wires.
Working beneath an active bridge within a tidal marine environment introduced additional complexities around access, safety and construction sequencing.


The solution
Contech delivered a programme of targeted concrete repairs designed to restore structural integrity and improve the long-term durability of the bridge.
Repair methodologies were selected to suit each defect type and were undertaken in accordance with project specifications and quality requirements.
The works included:
- Controlled removal of unsound concrete
- Hydrodemolition and substrate preparation
- Treatment and protection of exposed reinforcement
- Installation of reinforcement repairs where required
- Reinstatement using specialist concrete repair materials
- Final inspection and quality verification.
By focusing on localised repairs, the project addressed deterioration efficiently while preserving the existing structure.



Specialist marine access
Temporary works formed a critical component of the project delivery strategy.
Suspended access platforms and scaffold systems were installed beneath the bridge to provide safe access to beam soffits, beam ends and pier elements. The access systems were carefully designed to accommodate tidal movements, bridge geometry and navigation requirements within the channel.
Traffic management measures were also implemented throughout the works to maintain the safe operation of SH29A and minimise disruption to road users.


Delivering quality in challenging conditions
The project was delivered under a comprehensive quality, health and safety, and environmental management framework.
Inspection and test plans guided each stage of the repair process, while environmental controls and stakeholder management measures were maintained throughout construction.
Contech worked collaboratively with NZTA, Beca and other stakeholders to ensure the repairs were delivered safely, efficiently, cost-effectively, and in accordance with project requirements.

The outcome
The SH29A Maungatapu Bridge Concrete Repairs project has improved the condition and durability of this important transport asset.
Through careful planning, specialist access solutions and proven concrete repair methodologies, Contech helped extend the service life of the bridge and support its continued safe and reliable operation for the communities that depend on it every day.
