This single storey structure is constructed from a combination of concrete walls and steel portal frames. When a quantitative detailed engineering evaluation was carried out on the building a critical structural weakness was determined.
The precast panels contained Non-Ductile mesh reinforcing . With this type of reinforcing, the panels will fail in a brittle fashion under ULS earthquake loading. It was determined from this evaluation that the capacity of the building was of 16% NBS.
It was recommended that the building be strengthened to 67% NBS. As part of the strengthening up-grade, the design called for Sika Carbodur plates to be installed on both the interior and exterior faces of the precast panel walls. BBR Contech was contracted by Hawkins Interiors to install the FRP strengthening. In total 177LM of Carbodur S1214 was installed.
